Limited by Google's quota

Perchy on YouTube

Perchy can read and answer YouTube live chat, moderate it and run polls. What limits it is Google's daily quota for apps, not Perchy, and a few things do not exist in YouTube's API at all.

What Perchy can do

What works on YouTube, and what does not.

Every row is read from the same table the bot uses, so the site cannot promise more than the bot can do.

Chat

  • Read chat

    Works with limits

Works, but every read spends part of Google's daily quota for the whole Perchy project, so how many channels can be read at once depends on the quota Google grants.

  • Send chat messages

    Works with limits

Each message costs 50 units of the daily quota, which is about 200 messages a day across every channel together at the default. Replies are kept short.

  • Announcements

    Not available

YouTube has no announcement message. Perchy uses a normal chat message.

  • Emote statistics

    Works with limits

YouTube chat has no list of emotes. Perchy can count emoji in the text, but not custom emotes.

Moderation

  • Delete messages

    Works with limits

Works when the bot is a moderator of that chat. Each action costs quota.

  • Time out viewers

    Works with limits

Works as a temporary ban, when the bot is a moderator. Each action costs quota.

  • Ban viewers

    Works with limits

Works when the bot is a moderator. It cannot ban the owner or another moderator.

  • Chat modes, like slow mode

    Not available

YouTube's API has no slow mode or members only switch. Set those in YouTube Studio.

Engage

  • Native polls

    Works with limits

Created through a chat message with two to four options. YouTube gives polls no timer, so Perchy closes it with a second call.

  • Native predictions

    Not available

YouTube has no predictions. Perchy runs seed predictions in chat.

  • Clips

    Not available

YouTube's API cannot create clips. Perchy marks the moment and saves the VOD link.

  • Shoutouts

    Not available

YouTube has no shoutout. Perchy can post a normal chat message instead.

  • Channel point rewards

    Not available

YouTube has no channel points. Seeds still work, in chat.

Events

  • Follow events

    Works with limits

YouTube pushes no follow events. Perchy checks the subscriber list now and then, so follows arrive late.

  • Subscription events

    Works

    Works as documented.

  • Raid events

    Not available

    YouTube sends no raid events.

  • Tips

    Works

    Works as documented.

  • Viewer count

    Works with limits

Read by asking, not pushed, and the owner can hide the count.

Channel

  • Set title and category

    Works with limits

The title works. Category means YouTube's video category, not a game.

  • Ads

    Works with limits

Perchy can start an ad break with your permission. Reading the upcoming schedule is limited.

Getting set up

Three steps to connect.

It takes a couple of minutes, and you can switch features on one at a time.

  1. 1

    Connect your channel

You allow Perchy to read your channel's live broadcasts. Google asks for permission on its own screen, and Perchy asks only for what the features you switch on need.

  2. 2

Add the bot to your chat

Perchy speaks through a bot account. To moderate, make that account a moderator of your live chat in YouTube Studio.

  3. 3

    Know the quota

Google gives every app a daily budget of API calls, shared by everyone using that app. Perchy has to ration it, which is why YouTube works with limits.

Limits

Numbers worth knowing.

These come from the platform's own documentation, not from us.

  • The default quota is 10,000 units a day for the whole Perchy project, shared by every channel.
  • Reading chat costs 1 unit a call. Sending a message, a poll or a moderation action costs 50.
  • That is about 200 sent messages a day across all channels together, until Google grants more.
  • YouTube does not document a maximum message length. To be safe, Perchy keeps replies to 200 characters.
  • Polls take 2 to 4 options and have no timer.

What Perchy does instead

  • Native predictions. Runs seed predictions in chat.
  • Clips. Marks the moment and saves the VOD link.
  • Shoutouts. Posts a normal chat message.
  • Announcements. Uses a normal chat message.
